In my consulting work, I am an educator first. I am committed to helping organizations learn how to maximize the Internet and the New Media to reach their customers and constituents. Effective communication requires an understanding of how people interact with the communication mediums they use. When writing for the web, for example, one must pay careful attention the realities of the Internet How is writing for the web different from other kinds of writing. How do most people navigate and use websites? Where are their eyes drawn on the page? What do they expect to see on a website? On your website? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you shape web content that is accessible, comprehensible, usable, effective, and elegant. I bring this knowledge to my consulting work.
I will always
I have a special passion for working with non-profit organizations. For most of my life, I have worked either as a volunteer or coordinator of volunteers for non-profits like Habitat for Humanity. This experience has taught me that Non-profits often lack the resources to adequately research or assess their own communication practices. I want to fill this gap with low-cost solutions.
My Ph.D. is an invaluable asset. As a doctoral student, I learned how to conduct research skillfully and thoroughly, and I learned the value of making research-based claims. As a consultant, I strive to base my work in good research. The work may require me to quickly get up to speed on an organization's history, or conduct focus group research, or set up usability testing. I bring these research techniques into my work every day.
